Los Toros of Unión de Tula
Maria Luisa Meza Kim & Eugenia Ambrocio
The town is divided into 5 basic neighborhoods. Before the Bull riding shows, each neighborhood sponsors a block party and welcomes any that come. At the party, music is played and food is served. This party is called the "Recibimiento" which translated means "Reception party". At one point, the queen and the neighborhood ("barrio") "Receive" and welcome the local rancher bringing bulls. The ceremonial bulls are then exhibited throughout the town and into the plaza. The party then moves to the plaza where the orange throwing, music and bull riding commences. In the last week of May, I have been told that there are two bull riding shows ("Los Toros") located in the bullring a.k.a. "La Plaza de Toros" which take place everyday. The first show is called the "Toro de Once" which is the Bull at Eleven a.m. show.
This show is free. The second show begins at 5:00 p.m. and is called "La Corrida de la Tarde" or "El Toro de la Tarde". There is a charge for this show (which is usually a donation). Both shows have raffles, music for people to dance to, and lots to drink (no I.D. required). As you can imagine, bullriding is fun to watch but is extremely dangerous for the rider. For the safety of the rider, staff within the ring as well as that of the crowd, cowboys (or in Spanish Vaqueros) with lassos are in place to patrol the ring. The cowboys are usually well dressed and are volunteers from the local community and ranches. After the "toros" there are a number of things to do in town. My favorite is to eat at the many restaurants open at night or the taco stands in the plaza (which make the best bacon dogs I've ever tasted). Many of the residents go to the after-parties at the local nightclubs or see the fireworks in the plaza (El Castillo) where the fun never ends.
